1. Solar System Prices in Sydney (October 2026)
The Solar Choice Price Index (1 October 2026) shows these average prices for Sydney, after the STC discount and including GST:

2. The STC Discount in 2026
Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) are deducted from your system price. The number you receive depends on system size, your postcode’s zone and the deeming period. Sydney is in STC zone 3 (rating 1.382), and the deeming period is 5 years for systems installed in 2026 and 4 years for 2027, so the discount shrinks each year. At about $38 per STC, an estimate for 2026 is:

Roof type and complexity

Equipment choices

These are normal installation requirements, not necessarily hidden fees, but they should be on the written quote: switchboard upgrade, scaffolding or height equipment, roof repairs, meter works and any grid connection fees.

5. Cheap Solar Ads vs a Quality Quote
Very low advertised prices can be hard to compare with a full quote. Before you accept any price, ask:
- Which panel and inverter models, and what warranties?
- Is the price after the STC discount, and how many STCs are assumed?
- Who installs it, and what is their Clean Energy Council accreditation number?
- Who handles warranty claims and how?
- Are switchboard, scaffolding and meter works included?
6. Solar Payback in Sydney: How to Estimate It
Payback is the system price divided by what it saves you each year. As an illustration only, if a 6 kW system costs $5,750 and saves a household $1,500 a year through lower bills and export credits, payback is about 3.8 years ($5,750 divided by $1,500). Your savings depend on how much solar you use at home, your retail rates and export credits. With feed-in rates at 3.4c to 6.5c per kWh in 2026-27, using solar in the home matters more than export. 7. Batteries and the Cost of Solar in Sydney
Adding a battery raises the upfront cost but can increase how much of your solar you use. CHOICE (updated 12 June 2026) reports installed costs after the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount of about $7,000 to $11,000 for 10 kWh, $11,000 to $15,000 for 15 kWh and $14,000 to $19,000 for 20 kWh, with a Sydney payback example of about 8.3 years at an $8,500 installed cost.
